Hieronymus Bosch and The Prado Museum
On Saturday the 28th of April I visited the Prado Museum in Madrid. The Prado museum is one the most famous art museums in the world and is renown for its collection of artists such as Goya, Rubens and Velazquez, to name but a few.
I wasn’t going to write a blog about this visit but I feel like I have to after seeing the largest collection of Hieronymus Bosch’s in the world. I had not heard of Bosch before going to the Prado but all I can say is that his work simply blew my mind.
All of his paintings had a weird and very imaginative style to them but the one painting that really amazed me was “The Garden Of Earthly Delights”. This painting is a triptych, which I learnt is a 3 panel painting that opens up and is connected. “The Gardens Of Earthly Delights” was painted between 1490 and 1500, over 500 years ago. The thing that I can’t get over is how someone from 500 years ago could visualise something this sinful but yet still be so extraordinary. I asked myself the question many times how did a man in 1490 come up with the idea to paint spherical cylinders, elephants, animal bodies with human heads, speed boats, ice stakes, the list goes on. His mind must have been full of the most disturbed thoughts as this art piece clearly shows.
As you will see you can look at this triptych for hours and keep finding something new. This is by far the most amazing painting I have seen in my life because when you look at it questions just flow through your mind, as you will see for yourself.
Did I like this painting?….I am not sure but I would love to understand the mind of Hieronymus Bosch.
