Difference Day
Difference Day is an organisation that creates a day that gives a company the opportunity to give something back to the community.
On Tuesday the 5th of September, Daniel, Jack, Sean and I head off to St Brigid's National School in Tallaght for a prep day. This school's playground was quite underdeveloped, the gardening area was overgrown and so were the edges of the playground. This was not an issue as on the 12th of September 250 Avalon employees were to the school to build a new outdoor classroom, football pitch and other amazing things for the playground. During our prep day we did all the dirty work, for instance we dug 9 holes in the concrete, each hole was 14 inches deep and 12 inches wide. This was extremely tiring as it took us about 3 hours to do all 9 holes. The next job we were given was to paint wooden boards white, these boards were going to be used next Tuesday.
The 12th of September came and I was prepared for the day ahead. I knew it was going to be a lot more tiring and exhausting than the last day but I was still very excited to see if we could get the job done. As Daniel had broken his collar bone, Hugo replaced him for the day. We arrived at the school at around 8am. Dennis O'Reilly, Maurice and Dave gave us the instructions for what we had to do. We spent about an hour preparing the sites that the Avalon employees were going to work on.
The 250 Avalon employees arrived, and were sent into the hall for tea, coffee and a quick briefing on what they we're going to be doing. I handed out the gloves and safety goggles with Hugo during the talk. Everyone was put into teams of 10-15 people. Sean, Jack, Hugo and I were a team and our job was to fill the skips with the soil and concrete that been dug up. We were constantly working, non stop until lunch. After lunch the work kicked off again.
The progress that was being made was phenomenal. I honestly didn't think that the playground was going to be finished in short period of time. I felt very good about myself when the whole thing was finished. When I look back over the before and after pictures, I am amazed at the work that had been done.
